Oregon State University is seeking candidates for Ship’s Assistant Cook position aboard our Research Vessel Wecoma. Applicants are required to have a USCG Merchant Mariner’s Document, US government issued passport, TWIC card, and be able to pass a USCG physical and drug screen. Position is a full time benefit eligible position. Salary range is $2,138 to $2,484 per month – based on experience. The R/V Wecoma is a 185' research vessel home ported in Newport, Oregon. Her primary purpose is to support oceanographic and atmospheric research throughout the Pacific Ocean for a variety of scientists from around the United States and overseas. The vessel is at sea an average of 200 days per year.

Perform a full range of procurement support functions to solicit, award,

highly technical reports, correspondence, memoranda, letters, spreadsheets,
etc.​, from handwritten/​electronic drafts and other sources using Microsoft
Word and Excel.​ Material to be typed frequently contains specialized
terminology peculiar to the maritime industry.​ Proofreads all correspondence,
reports, spreadsheets, etc.​, reviewing them for content, proper grammar,
punctuation, typographical errors and ascertains that all attachments are
included, properly labeled, and in good order; Assists staff members in the
preparation of technical packages and documents, including the collection,
analysis and summary of exhibits.​ Obtains information and specific data from
files or other sources; Initiates administrative management of office reports
and projects, including follow-through to completion; Prepares requisitions
and work orders utilizing NS-5 and IDEAS-PD programs which are MARAD specific
software.​ Is responsible for entering data into acceptable formats as directed
by the technical staff and making appropriate inquiries in the system as needed;

</td></tr><tr><td width="600"> SUMMARY: Assist in maintaining the safety of the boat for all passengers and employees. Maintain the cleanliness of the vessel's decks so that they are safe and attractive. Assist with vessel departure and arrival.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Greet and board passengers. Ensure that they board and disembark safely.
• Maintain cleanliness of vessel decks: sweep, pick up trash, and wash as required on a daily basis. May be asked to assist with repairs to any ship equipment including machinery. Paint when required.
• Assist with vessel departure and arrival: releasing and connecting cables and safety lines, raising and lowering ramps, etc.
• Perform constant watch for passenger safety and fires. Watch for traffic and debris on the river.
• Assist other departments as necessary, especially maintenance and housekeeping to keep vessel clean and maintained.
• Assist with taking on fuel.
• Participate in all safety and emergency squad drills. Ensure that all safety equipment is in operating order. Inform passengers of safety procedures.
• Provide positive communication and use Red Carpet Training skills with every patron and co-worker.
• Perform duties in a safe manner; report any potential safety hazards to management staff.
• Perform any reasonable, temporarily assigned job duties outside the position’s job description, where, in the Company’s judgment, those duties are necessary in the interest of efficiency, productivity, or guest service.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

About the Position: The Louisiana Field Office, located in Monroe, LA, manages natural resources, recreation and flood control on the Ouachita-Black Rivers Navigation Project. Currently the Louisiana Field Office manages 21 recreation areas along the Ouachita-Black Rivers and it's tributaries, including the Boeuf River, Tensas River, Little River and the control structure at Catahoula Dam.

Major Duties:
Secures floating plant with manila and synthetic lines, cables, wire straps, ratchets, etc. Handles lines in making up and breaking up tows; securing floating Plant, fastening plant to hauling equipment, hooking and unhooking Snags and other obstructions; hooking. hoisting, and lowering channel buoys; mooring and stabilizing barges and self-propelled vessels; and in shifting, moving, releasing, securing, mooring, and tending supply barges, material barges, equipment barges, fleet string-outs, etc. Operates and/or utilizes deck equipment such as small tow-line winch, capstans, winch-counted timber heads, and ratchets in tightening and securing lines and floating plant. Hand-signals boat operator, pilot, supervisory equipment operators, or other deckhands when their vision is obscured or limited. Makes periodic checks and inspections of mooring stabilizing and towing lines, lashing and ratchets, and below dock compartments.
Qualifications:
Applies skill and knowledge to operate pick-up trucks, dump trucks, and stake-body trucks, primarily in and around the project area and occasionally on long trips. The incumbent must have skill in handling the controls for starting, stopping, driving and backing of vehicles and a knowledge of the size and weight of vehicle to judge clearances, braking distances, and safest distance to be maintained from the preceding vehicle. Incumbent must be able to determine the shortest and safest routes to take. Incumbent must be skilled in the operation of the auxiliary equipment affixed to the vehicle.
Applies skill and knowledge in operation of outboard motors and skiff in turbulent water near locks and dams and moving vessels.
Applies skill and knowledge in the use of a wide variety of hand tools and equipment including, but not limited to, chain saws, pumps, sandblasters, paint guns, air compressors, steam cleaners, grinders, drill presses, axes, grease guns, jackhammers, portable concrete mixers, etc. Applies basic skill in the use of power saws, hand saws, sanders, painting utensils, when serving as helper to craftsmen.
Applies skills and knowledge to fabricate slings, tow lines, stabilizing straps and mooring lashes by weaving and interweaving cable and rope parts.
Applies skills and knowledge to properly secure lines, tie knots, and use cable clamps to repair or splice broken lines.
