This is also the time of year that most of the small-boat cruise operations start seriously looking at applications for the summer cruise season. If you are looking for a summer job in Southeast Alaska on a cruise or tour boat you should consider the following:

    Cruise West-
They operate the largest fleet of "mini" cruise ships up to 215 feet long, all summer in Southeast Alaska; mostly with week-long cruises from port to port similar to what the big cruise ships are doing. Minimum requirement for Captain/Mate is 100 ton inland mates license w/STCW. Also hiring deckhands, stewards, naturalists, etc. They pay isn't that great, but the jobs are fun, and it is a good way for new mates to get experience. Check out http://www.cruisewest.com/careers

    American Safari Cruises
These guys currently have three vessels operating in Alaska during the summertime. The boats are considered "yachts" and only take 6-12 passengers on "expedition" style, week-long trips that may include kayaking, fishing, hiking etc. The level of service is higher than Cruise West, and these "luxury" trips cost about twice as much. The website currently doesn't list any opening, but I'm sure they will be looking soon. A good friend of mine was captain with ASC for years, and loved it. Check out http://americansafaricruises.com/employment/

    The Boat Company
The Boat Company operates two beautiful vessels in SE Alaska. These guys are the top-of-the-line luxury expedition operation, with week-long itineraries that include fishing, kayaking and hiking. Hands down, the most amazing job I have ever had. Pay is respectable, and season is 15 weeks from May to Sept. Looking for Captains/Mates with 500 and 100 ton licenses, deckhand/guides with license (at least "six-pack"), stewards and chefs. Check out http://www.theboatcompany.com/employment.php
I know these guys are looking at applicants now.

    Allen Marine Tours
These guys operate a fleet of high-speed passenger catamarans in SE Alaska all summer- mostly serving the cruise ship passengers. The trips are generally from 3-hours to all-day long, and they focus on whales. If you dig whales, this is the outfit to get hired with. I worked with Allen Marine for years as a deckhand, and then as Captain. They build the boats in Sitka, and they are a blast to operate- with quad jets and speeds up to 35 kts. Also hiring deckhands, and passenger service crew. Pay is good, with tips and end of season bonus. Must find your own housing in AK. See http://www.allenmarinetours.com/contact/jobs/index.html

There is also a whole "fleet" of smaller charter vessels operating expedition-style cruises in SE Alaska all summer. Many of them are husband/wife type operations with a few other crew. But, if this is your kind of thing, it is worth looking them up and sending the resume. Check out http://www.nps.gov/glba/parkmgmt/charter-vesssels.htm for a list of charter operators that have concessions in Glacier Bay National Park- this isn't all the operators, but a good list nonetheless.

    Good Luck!

These guys have an awesome boat, and I'm sure it would be a blast to operate...but think twice about living in Whitter. As they say "nothin' shitter than Whittier", or another favorite: POW "prisoner of Whittier".

Spent some time there...not so great...I'm just sayin.

Charter Boat Captain for Mid May through Mid September possibly longer....
Would be rotating between these boats:

37 foot sixteen passenger vessel (does 1/2 day fishing charters and water taxis); inspected vessel; requires master's license; top of the line boat, totally decked out, fun to operate. Twin 225 Honda Outboards, full electronics; landing craft. Comes with paid deckhand; shared tips with deckhand.

32 foot six passenger vessel (does full day fishing trips, some kayak dropoffs) some half day fishing trips; totally decked out; top of the line boat; fun to operate. Twin 225 Honda outboards; full electronics; landing craft. Deckand available....

32 foot six passenger vessel, does strictly fishing charters for full days.
twin diesel (does not come with paid deckhand)..

26 foot Cabo Sportfishing boat; walkaround deck; 150-200 HP outboard (will be brand new in 2008): nice boat; fishes only 4 -5 people on half days only from late June through mid sept. No deckhand for this boat.

24' heavy duty welded aluminum skiff with twin 75 HP Outboards; used to do short water taxis in Resurrection Bay(six passengers). No deckhand for this boat.

When Captains are not working, they can also double as deckhands with other Captains so there is always work to do...

We are an equal opportunity employer. Looking for hard working, low maintenance, intelligent, qualified experienced Captain (six pack near coastal is minimum qualification); prefer Master's Near Coastal license but will consider 6 pack Near Coastal. No alcohol, no drugs; drug testing mandatory; safety training mandatory. Must not need any time off; living arrangements are in bunkhouse shared room setting (no room for family, etc.). Bunkhouse is $100 a month. We also have limited camper space available if you have your own camper. You should not expect time off during the summer months, especially in peak season. Please do not apply if you do not have a Captain's License; if you will need time off; if you are expecting visitors; if you cannot commit for the entire season.... You will be expected to maintain the boat; help with repairs when needed; refuel vessel each shift; clean boat and clean fish. You need to be personable, a hard worker, able to adapt to rustic Alaskan lifestyle; knowledgeable of fishing; have good references; no medical problems that would require you to take time off; be able to lift heavy halibut and heavy totes; and a team player. Our insurance company will require you to have some backround experience on other vessels. You will be required to purchase your own fishing license; guide license and have current First Aid and CPR. If you are not already on a bonafide drug testing program from a previous employer you will need to have a Pre-Employment drug test at the time of hire. Our emergency training period is 2 days long, and you would be expected to participate in it. You would be expected to donate a little time to learn the ropes from the present Captains (i.e fishing areas, how we fish, etc.) and we may possibly be able to pay you during this break in time as a deckhand. We do not pay for transportation to or from Alaska. We may be able to arrange half price transportation on the train from Anchorage to Seward (in season). Please do not apply unless you are serious about the position and ready to relocate to Alaska. We would require you to purchase a plane ticket to Alaska no later than March 15th if you were the successsful applicant and would ask that you were here approximately May 15th. You may call us at 907 903-1522 (ask for Sherrie) or you may email us at millerslanding@alaska.com Please send a resume and fill out the online job application on our website at www.millerslandingak.com Visit our website for photos, descriptions of what we do.<!-- START CLTAGS -->
