- Must have a detailed understanding of the DP computer systems, including changing between systems and the various modes of operation
- Must have knowledge of the emergency procedures and actions required due to the failures of: Input systems, Computer, Commands, Feedback, Generator/power, Thrusters
- To be aware of the latest operating procedures, equipment status, standing orders and any previous incidents
- Current OPITO approved HUET
We just had our career fair yesterday and people are interviewing today. Supposedly Transocean has ten new ships coming out and needs to hire a buttload of new DP operators. They're hiring straight from the academy so I'm guessing there's no exp. req.
Does anyone else feel that this particular thread will become extremely long if people just keep adding new job listings to the end of it? Should we now limit it to a month at a time so at the end of January a whole new thread will begin?
Thoughts?
Jobs do get filled, so the format should not matter as the sensible place to start would be on the last page.
I just jump to the last page to read the new posts.
Sounds kinda cool (no pun intended)
Marine Technician (2008-2009)
Raytheon Polar Services – Experience Antarctica
Seeking a unique adventure as well as employment? How would you like to be one of the few people on the planet to have the opportunity to work in Antarctica? Raytheon Polar Services is the primary contractor for the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) U.S. Antarctic Program. We are currently looking for a Marine Technician to deploy on Antarctic research vessels/stations on a contract basis.
We are looking for Primary and Alternate employees to fill all contract positions. The Primary is first in line for the position. The Alternate is next in line to deploy should the Primary be unable to meet deployment requirements.
Responsibilities:
The Marine Technician must have considerable knowledgeable and experience in the deployment and maintenance of the equipment and systems used in multi-disciplinary (marine biology, marine chemistry, marine geology and geophysics, and physical oceanography) oceanographic research, in order to work with limited supervision. Assists the Marine Project Coordinator with all phases of ship-board science support operations.
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required. A minimum of two years experience on research vessels assisting with scientific programs in an on-deck capacity, or other applicable career experience is required. The marine technician requires a comprehensive knowledge of at-sea oceanographic work.
Desired Qualifications:
College level coursework in marine or a science-related field is highly desirable. USCG license or document preferred. Experience in commercial marine operations such as merchant marine, fisheries, etc. is preferred. High-latitude or polar experience is a plus. An individual with academic research vessel experience is preferred.
Additional Polar Info:
All contract positions include competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package. For the time you are in Antarctica compensation also includes travel to and from the ice, room & board, and you are eligible for a performance-based bonus upon successful completion of your contract. FYI – Only authorized personnel are allowed on station and you need to remain on station for the duration of your contract except in case of emergency. Check out our website at www.rpsc.raytheon.com. All applicants must be able to provide proof of U.S. or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency once employment is offered and pass strict physical, dental, and psychological (for winter-over positions) examinations in order to qualify for deployment. Offers of employment are also contingent upon ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check. Failure to meet these requirements may result in withdrawal of employment offer or other employment action. All employees must also comply with applicable safety, environment, health, and waste management policies and procedures.
If you like to live on the edge and are interested in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity – go to www.RayJobs.com and apply today.
Raytheon is an equal opportunity employer and considers qualified applicants for employment without regard to race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, age, disability, or Vietnam era, or other eligible veteran status, or any other protected factor.
Worth applying for, but don't get your hopes up unless the new administration finds a way to provide NSF with some money. The coffers are tapped at the moment, and nothing is cast in stone for this fiscal year as of yet.
Be cautiously pragmatic...

Having been on the Superferry a couple times myself, just wondering why you think this way???
I'm VERY new to all this stuff, so please be patient. I'm a nurse and I'm interested in possibly finding a job on a ship for longer jobs. My uncle's neighbor works with a company that has him being out for three months and home for one...unfortunately he went back out before I could find out what company he works for!He said that they decent medical facilities onboard and that all the officers have to be at least medics, because they don't always have a nurse.
One or three months wouldn't be too bad....but from what I've found so far, the nursing jobs are more casual, not "full time" work. That is....if you can even get someone to call you back!! Ugh!! Is that normal in this industry??
Also, considering that most companies don't pay you for travel time to the ship....I'd like to find a company that ships out of Baltimore, Norfolk....or at least somewhere on the east coast.
Ok, well thank you in advance for any help that you may be able to give!!
MSC shows that they are expecting to have medical positions opening soon. They are largely east Coast. Sealiftcommant.com.
Also- NCLA hires nurses- but it's in Hawaii- 5 months on 5 weeks off- shipboardemployment@ncl.com.
The ferry has never been popular with a lot of the locals, has had a history of delays/accidents, and I'm sure the economy isn't helping any....

I watched "Sea Flight" hydrofoil Ma'alaea to Honolulu try and fail, the "Prince Kuhio" Ma'alaea to Kaunakakai try and fail, the "Maui Princess" Lahaina to Honolulu and Lahaina to K-kai ferry try and fail, the high speed ferries on Oahu try and fail, the ferry to Lana'i is struggling and I simply think the Superferry will suffer the same fate. They just won't be able to survive the extreme environmental conditions in Hawai'i, the anti-business climate that pervades the state, and the ancient and broken harbors system, let alone the present economic climate.
I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think I am.

I'd keep a close eye on the MSC Medical Services Officer opening at sealiftcommand.com if live in Norfolk, thats right up your ally. Base salary onboard ship is 76,888 & 52,287 when your on vacation on in the pool/training.
Most MSO's at MSC are ex Navy Corps-Man (just for comparison)
Buncha offshore jobs- (DP OPERATOR) also rigger, diver, anchor operator, crane operator etc. Might be a good way for someone to get a foot in the door in the gulf. www.globalind.com
One of my old bosuns quit the cruise ship to go work for them. He was an Ab (unlimited?) and said he was getting about double the pay. The cruise line paid the bosun $200 a day- so I'd imagine the pay is good.....
