    Default Dania beach recomendations

Hey Everyone,I'm going to be going to school at Starcenter this upcoming week, staying off Campus.

I'm not familiar with the Dania Beach/Ft Lauderdale area and would welcome any recomendations for restaurants, or things to do/see here.
Considering staying on Campus next time, anyone familiar with the quality of the food, accomodations etc.?
Thanks in advance for the help, smooth sailing to all...Leigh

Dania IS Ft Lauderdale. You can be in Miami in about 30 minutes, downtown Ft Lauderdale in about 5 minutes depending on traffic. There is every kind of place to stay and thing to eat imaginable as well as some you don't want to imagine. Enjoy.

I stayed at the Sheraton by the Airport a few years back. Just a few minutes toward the airport. You will basically pay the same the school minus the goose down comforters and nicer room, but you will need a mode of transportation.

Some crew houses are good too, but there are many to stay away from.

Ask Capt.Lee about buying me dinner on South Beach @ 0200 in the morning. Funny seeing an oblivious person getting a check for $350 bucks after offering to pay..lol. Boy, that Lobster, scallops, and beer was good....nice scenery too! Should have seen his face. I doubt he's ever spent that much in a grocery store.

FYI you can eat there everyday for free. they are not going to charge you. When you show up for class you have to go to the hotel check in to get your ID for entry in and out of the area, regardless that you are staying off campus. With that ID, it will allow you to eat at their dining facility which is very good. It is not fine dining, but it is better than the golden corral.

They have a large casino Seminole Hard Rock Cafe. There are a bunch of restaurants there and also a Hooter's. it is worth checking out. Also check out South Beach, Ocean Blvd. There are restaurants up and down that strip, make sure you bring your wallet. Anchorman and I were there one night and we ordered the specials. Filet mignon and Lobster tail, Calamari and 4 beers a piece. I figured I would pick this one up for us. She brought out the bill and I did not even look at it, I just gave her my credit card. She brought the paper for me to sign and I was floored. It was a little over 350 bucks just for me and him. I could not believe it.

    What class are you taking?

There is a Comfort Inn on Sheraton that is the closest 'decent' hotel or if you are going cheap there are numerous motels on RT1 north & south of the school.

Feel free to walk over to the Union HQ and pee on the front steps for me while you are there.

Well if you want a good home cooked meal , you might want to stop by GrandPa's just up the road from the school on US 1 N., just ask anybody in Dania Beach, they will direct you to the restaurant.

Roger on Grampa's,I saw it as i was driving about,I'll be sure to try it.

Anchorman: I wish you had a picture of Capt.Lee's face when he did see the check! PRICELESS

Capt Lee: From my own experience when they don't show the price on the menu I know I can't afford it!!!! Sounds like Anchorman got the better part of that one!!!!

I'm taking Cargo Handling, and I'm definitely not staying at the Sheraton or eating on Southbeach (no Offense Anchorman)

    Thanks for the recomendations!

If you are there over the weekend you have to check out the one day cruise to Freeport Bahamas. http://www.discoverycruiseline.com/ If you have more time you can go over one day and come back a different day. You cant take this trip and not have fun.....

Le Tub, http://www.theletub.com/ , is a cool little dive place on the ICW in Dania Beach. Check it out. Also, If you are going to make it to SoBe, go to Lincoln Rd. Many shops, places to eat, and some serious eye candy! My recommendation there is Spris http://www.spris.cc/ . Also, within walking distance to Lincoln is A La Folie, http://www.alafoliecafe.com/ , which is a French place that has awesome crepes. I get the caramelized pear/brie/walnut crepe and add chicken...it's awesome! Enjoy!

There was a joint across the street from Port Everglades called Freddy's Anchor Inn (or bar, or something like that). Years ago, it was a real good hangout for the crews off of the tankers at Everglades. Free drinks were handed out for life rings, so there were plenty around. Another place to go in Ft. Lauderdale is the Southport Raw Bar. At times it seems like it is the unoffical seaman's club. Back in the days before cell phones, there would be a line of guys calling home on the pay phone next to the head. I know the Southport is still there. Not sure about Freddy's. Both are in Lauderdale.
