N Koreans rattle ship-zone sabre
22 Dec 2009
North Korea has vowed to defend its maritime territory by force. North Korea has vowed to defend its maritime territory by force.
In a statement released yesterday by its navy, and published on the government-run Korean Central News Agency, military commanders declared: “The waters on the extension of the Military Demarcation Line in the West Sea under the control of our army as a peacetime naval firing zone of coastal and island artillery units.”
The naval commanders also ordered all fishing boats and warships in the zone to take measures to defend themselves.
The northern limit line was drawn up unilaterally by the US at the end of the Korean War (1950-53) and was not accepted by the North Korea.
A Seoul ship agent played down the warning’s impact, pointing out to Fairplay that the waters are politically sensitive and conflicts flare up from time to time.
“There is not much international shipping in this region, there is not much activity in the area, so I think there will be a limited effect,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal reported that an aircraft carrying arms from North Korea and seized in Bangkok was bound today for Iran. The report was based on documents obtained from a joint draft report from the Chicago-based TransArms and the International Peace Information Service in Antwerp.
The flight plan obtained by the researchers revealed that the crew was due to make refueling stops in Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and Ukraine before unloading in Tehran, IHS Global Insight reported.
“The search for those responsible for the shipment has so far led to a Hong Kong firm called Union Top Management, which signed a contract this month to lease the cargo plane,” Global Insight added.
I do like the teak floor in both the bridge and Engine Room!
I think you'd be SOL if there was a fire in the compartment beneath it.
Anyone who has ever wished to visit North Korea should watch this documentary:
