About the older cadets. SUNY is a great place for older cadets. I just got out with about 8 other 30+ year olds. You can live on campus or off. I was in the "new dorms" which were recently built. If you have a bachelors degree..go as a grad/license student. The campus is great and you are not far from the city.
Thanks for the replies guys. I tried to get in contact with someone about the dorm situation, but no joy. I just want to get a feel of what I can expect. I hope to make a visit up there in the spring whether I get in or not so I can get a better handle on off campus housing. I know its got to be expensive with it being NYC but I'm getting mixed results using craigslist. I also have over 60 hours of college time already so we will see where that might get me.

Applying for day student status is a rather strange affair. If your married or have children then you will almost definitely be allowed day student status. But if your planning on being in the USCG license program(even only the 500ton program) then it is a requirement to be in the Regiment, meaning you must live on campus.

From what I understand if you are prior military you would only have to participate in the regiment the indoc, afterwards you are considered a day student?
yes, that would be true, but like I said, if you want the USCG license it is mandatory to participate in the Regiment and do 3 cruises.

I believe this is incorrect: after Indoc, you can be a day student with limited Regimental activities, but you will wear the uniform and technically be in the Regiment. There are a significant number of "older" students, so it is a matter of tracking down the right people at school who know what they are talking about.
But you will have have to go on the Summer cruises. This is all assuming you want a USCG license.
